3 Tons of Fun bring the fun

We were recently joined by the lovely 3 women band 3 Tons of Fun, they have been one of South Africa's all female groups for the past 9 years. The group consists of Bulelwa Sakayi a.k.a Beautiful Bee, Michelle Thomas a.k.a Mysterious Michelle and Sthe Mfuphi a.k.a Saxy Sthe, and together they make up the Cape Town based band 3 Tons of Fun.

The trio have performed all around South Africa and also internationally. They have often performed at Shimmy Beach, Val de Vie, Sun City, The Castle of Good Hope, Gold Reef City and Sabi Sabi, just to name few places within South Africa. Internationally they toured to places such as Switzerland, Zambia, Ghana, Indonesia, Dubai, Nigeria, London and Mauritius, just name a few.

Sthe was born and raised in Durban, she has loved music since an early age. She studied Jazz at the Natal Technikon, before she started her own Jazz band in ‘98 called ‘Sthe and Friends.’ After finishing her Diploma in 2002, she moved to Cape Town to become a music teacher at the Athlone Academy of Music and Jazz Workshop. She would then go on to join the group 3 Tons of Fun in 2007, and she hasn’t looked back, as her incredible voice has helped her travel all across the country and parts of the world. She also performs as a solo artist.

Michelle is the only Cape Town native of the group, she has always had music in her blood, since her father was vocalist and drummer for a band called ‘Shindigs,’ even though he past away when she was just 6 years old. She studied for a Bachelors Degree at the University of Western Cape, however she dropped out in 3rd year because she never had a passion for it. Her passion instead was in music, the music bug had bitten her when she performed at the Baxter theatre in a school initiative called ‘ Music Active.’ She joined 3 Tons of Fun in 2007, and after a year she had to quit her day job working admin in a hospital, to sing and perform with the group on a full-time basis.

Bulelwa was born and raised in the Eastern Cape. She has loved music since a young age, as she felt that it was a way for her to express her emotions. She moved to Cape Town to study Chemical Engineering, but later decided to drop it, to start pursuing a career in the performing arts. She underwent singing training, and joined choral choirs and an acting agency.Which got her travelling and performing in numerous film productions, before she would go onto join 3 Tons of Fun in 2007.
