Expresso loves to celebrate innovative Africans doing amazing things, and this week we take a look at Roye Okupe. Roye is from Lagos, Nigeria, and created the first African comic book ‘E.X.O – The Legend of Wale Williams’.
Like many of us, Roye enjoyed reading comic books as a child, but he wanted something that can relate to African stories. And so E.X.O was born, an African superhero that many young comic book readers can look up to, knowing that Africa also has superheroes.
Roye studied graphic design, animation and has a Masters in computer science. He co-founded YouNeek Studios in 2012 and went on to produce Africa’s fist comic book series. The creation of E.X.O made headlines across the world and received critical acclaim with its debut in 2015. The E.X.O. series is a 136 book series set in a futuristic 2025 Nigeria and is Wale Williams’ story of redemption
Since the release of E.X.O, Roye has received tremendous recognition throughout Africa. In 2016, he was number 5 on Ventures Africa’s list of 40 African innovators to watch. E.X.O has now been translated into many different languages and is available across the globe, and animated movies based on the books have also been created.
Africa now has a plac eint eh universe of superheroes and Roye is a role model for many African kids to fight for their own dreams!
