Cape Town Water Restrictions Reach Level 4

The water crisis in Cape Town has reached an all time high, with the lack of rain, level 4 restrictions are about to be implicated from 1st of June. Expresso is joined by Priya Reddy, the Director of Communications at the City of Cape Town municipality.

The population growth in Cape Town combined with the drought have seriously effected the damn levels and lowered the water supply. Cape Town’s population has grown by 55% since 1995, causing a lot more water consumption. While the dams storage levels only increased by 15%. Only the Berg River Dam has been a sufficient addition to the city’s water storage, but the dam only began storage in 2007, however in 2009, the city estimated that it would be able to store enough water until 2020.

The water crisis that Cape Town is facing should not be seen as a temporary, its problem that Cape Town will be facing for a few years if the citizens don’t take it seriously and adhere to the new regulations that have been implemented. With the dams at 11%, we urge that all Cape Townians due their part by limiting their water usage.
