Durban July Highlights

The festivities may be over but it doesn’t seem like the heat that was this year’s Durban July has died down yet. The Durban July is regarded as one of the most highly anticipated spectacle events of the year begins. It’s an event of the highest standards and it never disappoints, so its no surprise that this year it had many stand out moments.

The winners
Many of those who attend the Durban July tend to forget that it’s actually meant to be all about horseracing and not just another high end social gathering, that’s not to say that they shouldn’t attend, as horseracing is deeply-rooted in the tradition of elegance and chic fashion. It was truly a day of wonder and spectacle with many winners, however there were no greater winners than the long shot horse Marinaresco, it’s trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe. Marinaresco was last year’s runner up. In second place was Al Sahem, followed by Edict of Nantes which took the third spot. They won the biggest race of the day and walked away with a winner’s cheque of R2.5 million, in front of a crowd of 55 000 spectators.

The Fashion
What would The Durban July be without fashion? Most of favourite celebrities came out dressed to impress. The theme for the day was “The colour of magic”, and local celebrities just ran with it, all the way. The controversial Skolopad “Lady in the yellow dress” was also in attendance and surprised many by not wearing a controversial outfit but instead, she went for something more modest and left all the controversy for the Eyadhini resident party goer, Zodwa Wabantu.
