EFC Champions Gareth Mclellan & Norman Wessels Training Tips
Concept: This week we look at how to avoid the biggest pitfall of the holiday period…overeating. With the help of several USN fitness professionals we take an honest look at how you can maintain a healthy eating plan during the festive season. With Christmas only around the corner and the race for the Summer body well and truly underway, this is holiday advice worth taking on your next road trip.
On today's show: EFC Fighters Norman 'The Chef' Wessels & Gareth 'Soldier Boy' Mclellan give some background into the lifestyle of MMA fighters and why it is so important to use meal replacement shakes. Given the strict weight class categories in which these fighters compete, being the right weight is actually part of their job. They reveal why the holiday period is so important for building quality lean muscle without putting excess stress on the body.
Top Tip: EFC Fighters have to fight in the right weight-category in order to be competitive, which means that strict eating plans are part of the job. However, when wanting to build strength and muscle, extra weight is actually and advantage. For this reason Fighters follow similar procedures to bodybuilders when training. This means they build muscle, strength and weight during the off-season, and then cut to fighting weight during the on-season.
What Can You Learn From This: Don’t get confused between getting big and getting ripped. Even though most people want both, it can be tremendously helpful to initiate a ‘building phase’ where you pack on muscle and lift heavy, before transitioning to a ‘cutting phase’ where you shred fat and get lean. This will allow your body to build quality muscle, before you shred unwanted fat.
