When it comes to the future of travelling, experts are always looking for the next big trend and destination – and the latest trend happens to be under the deep blue seas!
Underwater hotels, or “inner space tourism” as it's been dubbed, is set to make waves over the next few years, as the new Planet Ocean Underwater Hotel received it's U.S. Patent for it's design last year.
Not only is this 12-room luxury hotel innovative and quirky, but it's also leading the way in restoring coral reefs. The submarine like hotel will float 30 feet beneath the ocean surface, almost like a space station. Wherever the movable hotel is located, marine biologist Dr. Thomas Goreau will grow a natural coral reef habitat in that same area. The plan includes relocations to various sites around the world. On top of that, the hotel also aims to donate 10% of it's proceeds to coral reef restoration.
About 58% of the world's reefs are threatened by human activity, such as the coastal developments and building or yachts. Restoring these reefs is possible though, through low-voltage electrical currents that stimulate the growth of reefs on limestone surfaces.
As the modern traveller becomes more environmentally conscious, so do their tailor-made travel experiences. We give this initiative a green-thumbs-up!
