Have you ever thought of an idea for a video game/ wished you could play snakes and ladders on your phone? We know two young South African game developers who have just release a stylized dual-stick shooter game called RED. We caught up with Jack and Sam Shiels co-Founders of Knife Media.
Jack and Sam Shiels were always involved in computer media. Beginning when we were toddlers playing games on our old Macintosh, to 2D and 3D animation in Flash and Strata Studio around age 10.
We began game programming at age 10 and 11, working primarily with simple engines we found for free on the internet such as Silvercreator and Dim3. Sam developed his first title soon afterwards - a quiz themed game for Mac OS X. Later on he worked on a full 3D multiplayer shooter called Tiny Tanks. He entered it into a competition where he won a license for Unity3D - the engine we still use today. Here we were introduced to the most pivotal software for our games development.
Our biggest success was with a very simple Snakes and Ladders game for iPad. There weren't any available, so we made one. It was soon featured by Apple on the App Store and has since sold several thousand copies: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=78029
It is quite interesting that small a gap in the market can result in successful product launches!
Our next game is of course RED. We are currently live on the OUYA store and available to purchase, whilst iPhone and iPad support will arrive in July.
RED is the ultimate dual stick shooter - visceral, vibrant and filled to the brim with unlockables! Take the role of Rick Steele as he battles an invasion of mutants in the city. Using a variety of powerups, abilities and weapons, he will need to fend off hordes of disgusting and furious creatures dead set on consuming everything and everyone in their sight. Featuring:
