Knysna Disaster

The Cape Storm may have came to a quick end, but many across the Western Cape were still feeling the after affects and non more so than the residents of Knysna.

There had been over 10 000 Knysna residents who have been forced to evacuate their homes overnight due fires that were started and escalated by the Cape Storm, over the two days storm. They were being accommodated in community halls. Knysna currently has around 77 000 residents. James-Brent Styan, the Provincial local governance spokesman confirmed the evacuation on Thursday morning.

Styan issued a statement saying, “The fire in Knysna is the largest and most destructive fire in a built up area in the Western Cape in recent memory with thousands displaced. It comes on the back of the worst storm seen in the Western Cape in at least thirty years.”
Former reports had stated that there were only five deaths from the storm, sadly however the death toll seemed to be had risen over the next few days to  an undisclosed amount, one of those was a 3 year old child. The child’s body was recovered from a burned out building in Welbedacht, Knysna.

Here are a few thing that you can do yourself, to help those who have been effected near you,

  • Donating warm clothing and blankets for the homeless at your nearest shelter
  • Donating blankets, food and pet food to animal rescue centres and shelters.
  • Hand out food to people who less fortunate and couldn’t find shelter.

You can still help those in need by donating to the following

Here are a few non-profit organisations with Disaster Management teams, for you to offer help.
