Movie cars or real life!? Meet the BMW i3 and i8
BMW launched its revolutionary new electric cars in South Africa last week, and Expresso's Ciro De Siena got to take them on a spin.
Here is what he had to say:
It's not very often that I drive something that feels like its from the future. The BMW i3 is fully electric and on a full charge costing just R20, will travel nearly 160km. Having driven the car extensively through Cape Town, it's hard to imagine that this isn't the future of urban motoring. The cool thing is, you can't make petrol at home, but you can make electricity at home, which means that if your house is off the grid, your day-to-day fuel needs would be free.
The i8 is more of a statement, This is BMW reclaiming the super sportscar segment in the boldest way possible - everything else just looks dated. With a powerful electric motor under the bonnet, and a powerful 3-cylinder turbopetrol in the boot, the i8 develops a combined 266kW, which delivers searing performance in such a lightweight car. The amazing thing is how it does this though: it will run on electricity alone up to 120km/h for up to 35km, meaning that if you drive it gently, it will use no fuel at all on short trips. There is some seriously smart tech in this car, which will induce a headache in most people trying to understand it, but what you really need to know is that this car quite literally creates pandemonium where ever it goes, is fantastic to drive and costs R1.8million.
