Death of Chris Hani in 1993, ANC and anti-apartheid civil rights stalwart Chris Hani was gunned down outside of his home. Hanni was the leader of the South African Communist Party, and referred to as a hero by many. Hani was also a commander in the ANC’s military wing, Umkhonto We Sizwe.
Napoleon suffers defeat in 1814, French leader Napoleon was defeated by the Spanish and British at the Battle of Toulouse, it was one of the final battles of the Napoleonic war.
Boer War In 1902, the Boer War came to an end, with the Afrikaans Boers admitting defeat and accepting the British terms of surrender.
Titanic In 1912, the largest cruise ship at the time, the Titanic, set sail on it’s maiden voyage on the north Atlantic Ocean from Southampton, England, to New York. It had 2224 passengers on board, of those, around 1500 passed away, when the Ship sank after hitting an iceberg, on the fifth day of the voyage.
The Great Gatsby In 1925, American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” was published for the first time, little did her know that he had written a book that would be considered his masterpiece and a cautionary tale of the ‘American Dream’ during the twenties.
House of Wax In 1953, the first 3D film done by a major Hollywood studio, was released, House of Wax. The film was also the 3D film with stereophonic sound in a regular theatre. The film was directed by Andre DeToth and a remake of 1933 film, Mystery of the Wax Museum.
