The South African Music Awards are back! The biggest names and the hottest up and comers will be battling it out for the richest prize in the land, a SAMA award. The SAMAs will be taking place at the Sun City resort in the North West province on 27 May. The nominees were announced on Thursday night, 20 April.
All eyes are on Mabala Noise rapper, Nasty C, who seemed to have taken over 2016 and what now seems like 2017 too! He leads the bunch with a whopping six nominations, all from his debut album Bad Hair Extensions. He has been nominated for Best Album of the Year, and his videos ‘Don’t Do It’ and ‘Good Girls’ are in the running for Best Music Video of the Year. However the self-proclaimed King of African Rap, Kwesta, is hot on his heels with five nominations.
What would would the SAMAs be without an Ambitious Entertainment artist, who scooped many awards last year, and this year they have newcomer Amanda Black with four nominations. Babes Wodumo, the newly elected queen of gqom, bagged three nominations.
The Soil was nominated for best Duo/Group of the year, they performed on Expresso not too long ago!
Can we call this the year of the newcomers? Artists who released their debut or second projects in the past year dominated nominations. "This is the year newcomers take most of the limelight, undoubtedly," said RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi. "It is truly encouraging to see so many young and new artists dominate the list. It can only bode well for the industry. The future is bright and we couldn’t be happier for them."
