We all have our favourite classic films that we can’t stop watching, no matter how many years go by since the first time we’ve seen it. But how would these iconic movies have turned out with different actors in the lead role?
For Throwback Thursday this morning we’re looking at famous actors that turned down classic roles in some of the most legendary films from the past few decades.
Will Smith – The Matrix
In 1999 actor Will Smith turned down the leading role of Neo in the popular Matrix trilogy, in favour of appearing in the western comedy Wild Wild West.
The Matrix trilogy went on to make close to 2billion dollars at the box office, of which Keanu made 115million. That’s more than Wild Wild West made at the box office!
John Travolta - Forrest Gump
It’s difficult to imagine, but the classic Tom Hanks role in Forrest Gump was initially offered to John Travolta. He declined the part and has since openly admitted that passing on the role was one of the biggest mistakes of his career.
Hanks eventully went on to win the Best Actor Oscar-award in 1995 for the role.
Tom Hanks – Jerry Maguire
Director Cameron Crowe has admitted that he wrote the 1996 sports drama ‘Jerry Maguire’ with Tom Hanks specifically in mind.
Hanks couldn’t take the role, as he was busy directing another film and Tom Cruise stepped in for what would become one of his biggest roles & one of the best films of 1996 that coined the terms “Show me the money!” and “You had me at hello”.
Tom Sellick – Indiana Jones
In 1981 Tom Selleck turned down the role of Indiana Jones in the hit film ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ to do the ‘Magnum P.I’ movie instead. That’s not the only major role Tom has turned down, he also said no to playing Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch – a role David Hasselhoff would then go on and do.
Hugh Jackman – James Bond
Most actors would give anything to play James Bond, but not Hugh Jackman. He declined to be considered for taking the part of Bond, 10 years ago around the time of the first X-Men film.
