Top Five Trends for 2017

Nicholas Strelitz Fashion Editor Expresso

By Nicholas Strelitz
We’ve talked through a fortune of trends on Expresso in 2017 – some good and some very, very bad.  From the international catwalks to the street style capitals of the world, this year has proved more than interesting when it comes to the fashion on display. I’ve taken all of that know-how and outlined my top 5 trends for the summer season ahead.  Each, in my humble opinion, will transcend the realm of trend and enter the land of fashion staple.  Each is wearable, each has an inherent fashion flair, and, more importantly, each is fun!  Exactly what good fashion is all about.

5. Stripes

Vertical, horizontal, pinstripe, or block, we’re loving them all!  Top tip – horizontal stripes tend to slim the body, while vertical tends to widen.  So if you’re a skinny minny and want to add a bit of bulk, go vertical, and for the curvier women looking to shave off a few pound, it’s all about the horizontal.
4. Men in pink

Pink is the colour of the season across the board – for men, women, dogs, cats – everyone! Long thought to be a women’s only colour is decidedly more masculine this season, while still bringing that quintessential feminine softness. Top tip for men out there – start slowly. Look at pink accents before venturing out for that tonal look.  Whether a handkerchiefs, pink socks, or a pale pink tee, let the process happen organically. I promise you, you’ll end up embracing all of that pink!
3. New shirting

This season saw asymmetric shirt dresses, collarless shirts, the cropped shirt – designers were having fun with this perennial staple, as were street style aficionados.  My advice, get your classic white oxford out and have some DIY fun!  Whether you’re cutting the collar off, cropping from the base, or wearing off the shoulder, let’s get crafty!
2. Sleeves

Top 5 Trends for 2017 - Sleeves

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trend take-off so fast and furiously as the sleeve has in 2017 – both on the runway and on the streets.  It’s about making a statement with your arms.  From the poof to the ruffle, dramatic ties to flares, forget every other element in your garment – make your sleeve talk! Top tip,  the dramatic sleeve is the perfect remedy in taking your outfit from basic casual to more fashion in a second, but keep it simple with neutral tones.  Instant drama without pushing it into hysteria.
1. Androgyny

Top 5 Trends for 2017 - Androgyny

Ladies, don’t be surprised if you come home to see your boyfriend cooking in your favourite skirt this summer.  It’s androgyny.  This is my number 1 precisely for the fact that it represents fashion fluidity at its best.  Man, woman, black, white, gay, straight. Androgyny is a marker for where we are in fashion right now, which is at the forefront of inclusiveness, diversity, and openness.  We don’t care who you are or where you come from – no judgement, only men in dresses.
No matter what your style or trend preference, choose what works for you, make it your own, and go out and slay this summer!
