World Health Day

Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) finds a new theme which is a priority of public health, and this year’s theme for World Health Day is depression, which is going to be year long campaign. Depression is the biggest disability and cause of ill health globally as it’s often misunderstood and therefore goes undiagnosed. There is an urgent need to educate many about depression.

Between the ages of 13-15 years-old, 1 in 4 children suffer from depression. Depression is highst among teens, youth, women after childbirth and people above 60. Cases of depression have have gone up by 20% in the last 10 years, across the globe. WHO stats show that over 300 million people around the world are living with depression.
"depression is persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that people normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities for two weeks or more," according to the World Health Organization

Recent statistics show that two-thirds of suicides, are people who suffered from depression, which was left untreated, it is the second leading cause One of the common misconception about depression is that it is just being sad. Extreme sadness is however a main characteristic, however it is a passing emotion while depression is a chronic mental illness, where you go through emotions such as anxiety and a sense of emptiness.
